Hi Seth,
Your was the first podcast I heard with Joanna Penn, and you actually inspired me to do the free ebooks. :-) I am also gathering the equipment I need to make my own audiobooks to put up on iTunes, which is another thing your podcast interview has inspired. I still get authors warning me that I shouldn't be giving away my work for free and they cringe when I mention doing an audiobook to post up for free as well, but you know, the reality is that I have not only gained an audience but I've actually increased book sales and have gotten emails asking when the next book is out. That never happened when I was marketing the "buy my book" way. I hear horror stories about piracy too, but that doesn't bother me either. One author purposely does not have ebooks because of piracy fears, but she found her book up on ebay as an ebook anyway. It just seems to me that it'll happen at some point. So that is why I don't sweat the piracy thing.
Okay. Enough of my soapbox. :-) I appreciate the comment and I do also check out your site on a regular basis. Again, like Tony, I've been a lurker. But I really have learned a lot of great things from both of you and Joanna Penn.

Hi Tony,
I recently listened to a podcast you did with Joanna Penn. There's so much great information that I sometimes don't even know where to start. I do follow your blog too and read it much more than I ever comment.
When I decided to break away from the traditional romance formula (which was also the day I officially gave up on submitting to traditional publishers and agents), it was both a terrifying and liberating experience. On one hand, I wondered if anyone out there would even read me once I did that. But on the other, I figured that I could at least write the story that I was most passionate about and since I set it up for free, at least people couldn't complain that they wasted money on me. I guess you never really know how something is going to go until you try.
I'll try to comment on your blog instead of just being a lurker. :-) And thanks. I did see that you had commented on one of long ago posts on my writing, publishing and promotion site, but I didn't even see the comment until about a month later. I have now set up my blog so I have to moderate comments or else I'll just forget to check. I was much more organized before I had kids. :-)

Hey Ruth and Melanie,
Great interview! Thanks so much for mentioning my story and the link to my interview with Joanna Penn. Yep! I did it by giving my audiobook away online--read it myself and even did voices! Turned out the audience really liked my book AND the enthusiasm I brought to the read. Now JACK WAKES UP is out from Random House and available everywhere!
You can hear it free still on my site and read the first three chapters for free also:
they're here <a href="http://sethharwood.com" rel="nofollow">sethharwood.com</a>

Keep up the great work, both of you!

Ruth and Melanie,

What a great interview. I love learning more about authors after they publish their book. Ruth, I am impressed with your marketing plan and activities. Great job at finding something that works for you!

I also think it's great how you follow your own creative bent as you write your book and don't force yourself into a formulaic box. You're right, that can be something that can find you your own following.

Thanks for mentioning my blog in your interview. Good luck with the rest of your writing and marketing activities. I would be honored to be kept up to date on how things are going with you.

I can't emphasize enough how much great information I've gathered from Joanna Penn at The Creative Penn. I could have gone on and on about the other authors she's had on her podcasts too, but this interview turned into a "book" the way it was. :)

Thanks for Tweeting about it, Joanna. Now I need to go post it up on FB and Myspace.
